Heading to Stockholm, the beautiful capital of Scandinavia? You probably heard of the famous old town but may be confused about what else to see.
In this article I listed 5 things to do I recommend to friends on their first visit to Stockholm.
1. Wander around the paved streets of Gamla Stam (2h)
Colorful, and cute neighbourhood from the XIII-XVII centuries, the old town is one of the symbol of Stockholm. It’s a pleasure to stroll around the small streets and look at the vivid facades. Gamla Stan is a real photographer playground as long as you manage to avoid the crowds of tourists! Take also a look at the imposing royal palace and the Stockholm cathedral.
Good to know: don’t miss Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, the narrowest street of all
Subway station: Gamla stan
2. Feel like a Nobel prize winner at the City hall
“Stadshuset” is another landmark of Stockholm, with its romantic architecture and central location. To explore the indoors of the City hall and visit the famous Blue Hall where the Nobel prize dinner is held every year, join one of the guided tour. It costs 100SEK, last 45 min and is held hourly (read more here).
Good to know: It’s only possible to climb the City hall Tower from May to September and tickets are limited. It’s impossible to book so be there when the ticket office opens (read more here).
Subway station: T-central/Rådhuset
Enjoy the view from Västerbron, the west bridge
From the city hall, do like the locals and take a walk along Norr Mälarstrand. When you reach Rålambshovsparken, climb up to Västerbron, the bridge that links the islands Kungsholmen and Södermalm.
From there you can embrace the old town, the city and Södermälm. You will also realize that Stockholm is built on a archipelago.
It will take you around 45min to reach Hornstull.
Good know: The place is really windy! Bring a jacket.
Subway station: Rådhuset / Hornstull
Shop like a hipster on Södermalm
Stroll in SOFO, the charming area located between Folkungagatan and Ringvägen. It’s the perfect place to get your hands on designer furniture, organic products or second hand clothes.
Good to know: Many smaller shops are closed on Sunday.
Subway station: Medborgarplatsen
Stop for a “fika” canelbulle and latte
One should not leave Stockholm without having a fika – word used by Swedes to name the coffee break. Act like a local: order a latte with a kanelbulle, a tasty cinnamon bun that I got addicted to.
Good to know: Really few fika places serve alcohol, time to detox (or to head to a bar)!
Subway station: Possible all over Stockhom
24h in Stockholm?
What a shame, the city deserves more! No panic though, if you are on a lightning visit you can combine these 5 must do into a one day itinerary.
Do you agree with these 5 must do in Stockholm? What would be yours?
Beautiful and great info 🙂
Thanks CrazyGuy!
